Roblox is designed to be a safe environment for players of all ages, but like any online platform, it comes with risks. This guide walks through the key safety features available, how to use them effectively, and what to do if something goes wrong.
Account Privacy Settings
Your Roblox account has granular privacy controls found under Settings > Privacy. Key options include:
- Who can message me — set to Friends, Friends of Friends, or No one
- Who can chat with me in-app — controls direct messaging outside of games
- Who can chat with me in-game — controls the chat box during gameplay
- Who can invite me to private servers — limit invites to friends only
- Who can join me in-game — control who can follow you into games
- Who can see my inventory — hide your items from strangers
For younger players or cautious parents, setting everything to Friends Only dramatically limits unsolicited contact from strangers.
Parental Controls and PIN
Parents can add an extra layer of security by setting a Parental PIN in Settings > Security. Once a PIN is set, any changes to account settings require the PIN to be entered first — preventing a child from quietly loosening restrictions.
Roblox also offers Account Restrictions (under Settings > Security), which locks the account to a curated list of age-appropriate content and disables chat entirely for accounts under 13. When enabled, children can only play a pre-approved selection of games.
The Chat Filter
Roblox runs all in-game chat through an automated filter that blocks profanity, personal information, and other inappropriate content. Players under 13 have an even stricter filter applied automatically based on their date of birth. The filter isn’t perfect, but it catches the vast majority of harmful content.
If you see something that slipped through the filter, use the report function (described below) rather than engaging with it.
Two-Step Verification
Enable Two-Step Verification (2SV) in Settings > Security. With 2SV active, logging in from a new device requires a code sent to your email or authenticator app. This is the single most effective way to prevent account theft — a major concern since Roblox accounts with valuable items are frequently targeted by phishers.
Recognising and Avoiding Scams
The most common Roblox scams to watch out for:
- “Free Robux” generators — websites or videos promising free Robux in exchange for your login credentials. They steal your account. Roblox never gives away Robux for free through third-party sites.
- Phishing links — messages from other players with links to fake Roblox login pages. Always check the URL — legitimate Roblox pages are always on roblox.com
- Trade scams — players who offer to “overpay” then cancel and repeat with a lower value item, hoping you click Accept out of fatigue
- Impersonators — players with names similar to famous Roblox staff or developers claiming they can give you items
The golden rule: if something sounds too good to be true on Roblox, it’s a scam.
How to Report Players
If you encounter someone breaking Roblox’s rules — harassment, hate speech, inappropriate content — use the built-in report system:
- Click the Menu button (top-left) in any game
- Select Report next to the player’s name
- Choose a reason and add details if possible
- Submit — Roblox’s moderation team reviews reports
You can also report content (game descriptions, images, chat logs) directly from profiles and game pages by clicking the three-dot menu and selecting Report.
What Happens to Reported Accounts?
Roblox’s moderation team reviews every report. Depending on severity, punishments range from warning messages to temporary bans to permanent account deletion. If your own account is moderated unfairly, you can submit an appeal through the Roblox support page.
Tips for Parents
- Play a few games alongside your child to understand what they’re experiencing
- Keep communication open — let them know they can come to you if something feels wrong online
- Check their Friends list occasionally for unfamiliar names
- Review their in-game purchases in the Roblox billing history under account settings
- Consider a spending limit — set up a prepaid account funded by gift cards rather than a linked credit card
Roblox has invested heavily in safety infrastructure over the years. With the right settings and open communication, it can be a genuinely positive and creative experience for children and adults alike.
